RS Pro Type J IEC Thermocouple Probe with Leaf Termination

From RS Pro a Type J thermocouple temperature sensor conforming to IEC 584 standards designed for connecting to a surface. This thermocouple has a robust design with a glass fibre insulated cable surrounded by a stainless steel braid. The cable is terminated with a stainless steel shim which allows the thermocouple to be welded or soldered into place on a flat surface. These thermocouples have a grounded hot junction for a fast response time

What is a Thermocouple?

A thermocouple is a sensor used to measure temperature in a range of different processes and consists of two wire legs made from different metals joined together at their two ends to form two junctions. The hot, or measuring junction is connected to the body whose temperature is going to be measured. The cold junction or reference junction is connected to a body of known temperature. When the measuring junction is placed on something hot a voltage or potential difference between this and the reference junction occurs. This voltage can then be converted into a temperature measurement using thermocouple reference tables. This process is also known as the Seebeck Effect

What is a Welded Grounded Junction?

In a welded grounded junction the two thermocouple wires and sheath are welded together to form one junction at the probe tip. These thermocouples have a fast response time because all the thermocouple is making contact with the sheath allowing the heat to transfer easily.

What is a Surface Thermocouple?

This thermocouple is designed for measuring the temperature on a surface. Most thermocouples have a sensing tip where there ends of the thermocouple wires are encased in sheaths or protection tubes which do not allow for measuring the temperature of a surface area. In surface temperature sensing thermocouples the exposed welded wire junction is housed in a magnet or adhesive patch or, in this case terminated on to a stainless steel shim or 'leaf'. which provides a true surface contact.

Features and Benefits

• Meets IEC 584 standards

• Durable glass fibre insulated cable with stainless steel braid

• Grounded hot junction for fast response time

• Stainless steel 25 x 13 x 0.15 mm leaf termination

Applications

This Type J leaf thermocouple is ideal for use in applications where low profile temperature detection is required and is commonly used for fitting under band or nozzle heaters
