Cotter pins, also known as split pins, are used as a locking fastener used alongside bolts, pins and nuts to securely hold them in place when mechanical vibration over time can loosen them. The are designed to be inserted through the hole of a bolt or nut and then bent into different shapes that lock it in place and prevent the fastener from loosening.
