    Lamp Holders

Lamp holders, also known as light sockets, are fixtures used in lighting installations. They hold a bulb whilst also providing an electrical connection to it. It is essentially a connection between the wire and the bulb. Some lamp holders also provide support for a pendant or lampshade. You can learn more in our lamp holders guide.

    Lampholder Applications

    • B15 / B22 (Bayonet) - Bayonet cap (BC) fittings use a two-prong holding mechanism and the code number determines the connection base diameter.
    • E14 / E27 / E40 (Edison Screw) - Edison screw fittings have a threaded connection, with the diameter determined by the base type code.
    • GU4 / GU5.3 / GU10 / GZ10 - Halogen and LED spotlight fittings are a low voltage type with a twist and lock connection.
    • G5 / G13 (Fluorescent tube) - Fluorescent and led strips feature a two-pin fitting at both ends.
    • R7s - Linear Halogen capsules for floodlights and up-lighters have a 7mm R7s cap at each end of a long quartz capsule.
    • G4 / GY6.35 / G9 - Miniature halogen capsule lamps commonly used in integrated fittings and appliances, such as cooker hoods and kitchen cabinet lights.

Lamp holders are also designed for specific light bulb types, for example, LED, GLS or CFL. It is essential that you choose a lamp holder that is compatible with your bulb, and vice versa to ensure a safe installation.

What are Lamp holders made from?

How are bulbs fitted to a lamp holder?

Depending on the bulb and holder type, there are various methods. Most lamp holders fall under either screw-in, snap-fit or push-fit. Some lamp holders are also fitted with a switch to control the power to the bulb directly, rather than a remote switch that needs to be wired externally to the unit.

Lamp holders play a vital role in providing secure connections and reliable electrical circuits for various lighting applications. When selecting lamp holders, several factors should be considered, including bulb compatibility, fixture design, voltage requirements, and environmental conditions. It is important to choose lamp holders that are specifically designed for the intended bulb type and meet safety standards for the desired application.
